Description
Smith & Grant (Louisville, w. 1827-1831)
Coin silver, 4” length
Mark of Smith & Grant
This ladle, most likely used for salt, can easily be dated given the years of operation of this firm. Regarding the partnership, the identity of Grant has not surfaced yet to my knowledge, but Richard Ewing Smith seems to have been underappreciated as far as Kentucky silversmiths go. While Asa Blanchard produced the most well-known bourbon barrel shaped julep cups, at least one has surfaced by Smith. Recently a large pitcher awarded for the 1847 Galt House Stakes run at Louisville’s Oakland Race Course has appeared that was created by him. The Galt House actually served as Smith’s residence from 1845 until 1848.
